DAYTON, Ohio -- Have you ever noticed how, when it comes to climate change and politics, not many conservatives jump to lead the way? Who are the conservative leaders on climate, anyway?  Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida, co-founder of the House Climate Solutions Caucus, is considered moderate, a term derogatory in some political circles even if his views reflect more mainstream America than those who operate from the fringes. Sen. Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, is a self-professed conservative who also advocates for a price on carbon......

Democracy is hard. It’s especially hard with bipartisanship eroded and bickering and finger-pointing the primary accomplishments in Washington, DC. Yet monumental challenges require action, and one of the most serious — and divisive — issues demanding focus is climate change. As a millennial and a science- minded person, I can say without reservation that climate change is the largest issue facing my generation. In fact, the urgency plus political stalemate is the stuff of nightmares. Luckily there are a few bright lights. The EcoRight is one of them. And this little thing called democracy....

January 2020

Last year will likely go down in history as the second- or third-hottest year on record. It was also the year a lot of climate disputers finally got woke on climate change. Climate protests in some cities are staged regularly to block morning commutes, and opposing climate posts flood social media, making it easy to cast the debate as us vs. them, left vs. right. But not all conservatives are the bad guys; while we fully admit it has been a struggle to get momentum going in the Republican Party, those of us who make up the sector called the EcoRight have been talking about climate change all along.....

As a conservative and an Ohioan, I’m proud of Sen. Rob Portman for joining the Senate Climate Solutions Caucus. While he’s been known for championing means to enhance our energy efficiency, reforestation and carbon capture and sequestration, it’s good to see him ready to engage on more climate-specific work. Clear majorities in both political parties support federal climate action, and he’s in good company to produce with the other caucus members. During this time of tense, partisan rancor, it’s a welcome change to see a group of senators from both sides of the aisle and all regions of the country coming together to try to tackle the greatest challenge faced by our nation — and the world.
Thank you, Sen. Portman.
